We’re living in a world where answers come fast. Ask your phone a question, and within seconds, AI offers a solution. Curious about your symptoms? An AI chatbot will gladly give you a diagnosis. Want coping skills? There’s an app for that…probably twelve.
And while I celebrate innovation, I also feel the need to slow things down and say this: Technology can support your mental health, but it can’t replace the sacred, human experience of therapy.
Let me be clear: I’m not anti-AI. In fact, I use it in my own work to streamline tasks, access research faster, and educate more people about mental wellness. I think it’s important to normalize that many of us, including mental health professionals, use these tools. They can be helpful.
But here’s the caution: not all mental health support is created equal.
AI doesn’t know your lived experience.
It can’t pick up on the nuance of your silence.
It won’t pause when your voice shakes or check in when your eyes tear up.
It can’t ask the deeper question behind your “I’m fine.”
What AI Gets Wrong
AI tools are programmed responses. They don’t know your cultural identity, your trauma history, your survival strategies, or how many times you’ve had to keep going without support. They don’t understand what it’s like to grow up navigating systems that weren’t built for you.
They might be able to offer insight, but they can’t offer intimacy.
Therapy Is Relationship, Not a Script
Therapy isn’t just about giving advice or solving problems. It’s about relationship. Presence. Trust. Safety.
At COHR Psychologist & Associates, we talk a lot about healing through connection, with self, with others, and with community. When you sit across from a therapist who sees you (fully and without judgment) something powerful happens. You begin to unravel the old narratives, explore your patterns, and move toward healing at your own pace.
You don’t have to explain your culture before you can begin your care here. That’s the difference. That’s the work.
A Therapist Doesn’t Just Hear You. They Hold You.
So, if you’ve ever asked ChatGPT, TikTok, or Google to help you “figure it out,” you’re not alone. Many people start there…and that’s okay.
But if those answers felt flat…
If they left you feeling even more overwhelmed…
If the “support” didn’t stick when life got messy…
I invite you to consider something different:
- A space where your story is held with care.
- A space where the response is tailored to you, not a script.
- A space where we do more than problem-solve. We heal.
Final Thoughts: Let’s Keep It Real
At COHR, therapy isn’t stiff or clinical. We keep it real.
You deserve real, human connection. Therapy isn’t about fixing you…it’s about walking with you.
We do that with cultural humility, clinical expertise, and a whole lot of heart.
